At the request of Doordarshan (the national TV station in India) Good News Productions, International in Damoh, India produced a program that addressed drug and alcohol problems among Indian young people. The station liked it so well, it was aired on Gandhi’s birthday, a national holiday in India. Literally millions of people watched this program, and the response was so great that the review committee of Doordarshan asked GNPI to do 26 programs dedicated to issues that young people are dealing with.
Doordarshan requires 13 of the 26 programs to be written and filmed before they make final broadcast decisions. The team in Damoh is nearing completion of these 13 programs and will be going to the cable company very soon.
If you take a look at young people in a cross section of the world’s nations, a very interesting phenomenon emerges. Regardless of the country, language, or culture, the issues they deal with are pretty much the same. In addition to this blending of the world’s youth culture, it seems that as technology improves, communication continues to become cheaper, easier, and faster. The same is true for travel. Forty years ago, a person had to literally take a slow boat to China. Airplanes now leave from local airports bound for China, Africa, India, and all kinds of “faraway” places every hour of the day. The smaller the world gets because of communication, travel, and international trade, the more the “same” all the children of the world begin to look and act. The programs GNPI-Damoh produce reflect this trend.
Through the message of these programs, the young people of India can gain a better understanding of the difference Jesus Christ can make, if they allow him to come into their hearts.
When you think of issues that teenagers in India face, would you include drugs and alcohol in these issues? Would you think of suicide, peer pressure, or materialism? These are some of the topics the series will address. Other topics include living in a fantasy world and gender roles within society. When these programs air, the potential number of people who will be watching is well into the millions. Through the message of these programs, the young people of India can gain a better understanding of the difference Jesus Christ can make, if they allow him to come into their hearts. This would release the profound potential this younger generation holds to point their communities toward the one true God. Please pray for the crew in Damoh as they concentrate efforts on this youth series.
