India Pilgrimage Is Obligation, Not Fun

At the end of a long day on bad roads, I finally laid eyes on the Golden Temple in Amritsar, India, a popular tourist spot and holy site that millions of Sikh believers visit yearly. It was nearly 9 pm but the place was packed with pilgrims, standing in line for the free food, ritually cleansing themselves in the sacred pool or waiting to gain entrance to where the holy gurus were worshipping. I followed the traditions and removed my shoes, washed my feet and covered my head. That’s when I saw the TV camera.
