Redeeming the Time
By Mike Schrage on

“Redeeming the time.” That phrase in the King James Version of Paul’s letters to the Ephesians (5:16) and Colossians (4:5) became incredibly clear to me this week in East Africa. Marty McFarland was a spunky missionary and working mother in Arusha, Tanzania. Her passion to tell people about Jesus was contagious. She and her husband Steve were “second termers” going to the mission field as second career people. They wanted to empower nationals with tools to enable them to make the most of the time. The McFarlands had been in Tanzania since 2000.

Why Do Things Differently?
By Ziden Nutt on

In late 1976, thirty-seven major denominations banded together in a unified effort to harness the technology of the Applied Technology Satellite No. 6. The challenge had come through Colonel Lawson Wynne, by the U. S. Government and NASA, that churches could use the experimental communication satellite if all programming would be:  (1) non-sectarian (Bible only, like Frank Borman’s reading from Apollo 10 on Christmas Eve), (2) in the language and culture of the people to whom the programs are beamed, and (3) with no blatant preaching.

Where Are Your Headquarters?
By Ziden Nutt on

Though his physical stature was slight and frail, Chief Dandawa stood strong as a Paramount Chief in Zimbabwe. Under discussion on that tense day in September of 1961 was whether he would grant permission for us to live in his area and establish a Christian work. He explained that his people thought any white man would steal their wives and sell them as slaves. For some reason he acted as though he might be interested—as if he were looking for something. Then he asked two questions: (1) Where are your headquarters? And..

Have You Heard?
By Mike Schrage on

I met a couple a few weeks ago, who just celebrated 61 years together! That’s amazing, but let me tell you what I found to be even more amazing. When I talked with their preacher recently, he shared that both of them are getting hard of hearing. They have intentionally not purchased hearing aids because of the high costs—up to $2,000 a piece! So they’ve been getting along. Recently someone mentioned that they could at least refurbish a unit that a friend no longer needed who had passed away.

"It" Made All the Difference
By Ziden Nutt on

“It” just hadn’t dawned on them. The last church growth seminar hadn’t mentioned “it.” The statewide convention talked about growth, but “it” wasn’t included. Their last annual report listed additions, but “it” wasn’t even considered in the total.

Only A Candy Bar
By Ziden Nutt on

World War II was raging, and the entire nation was at work. Factories had retooled, and were running full steam ahead. In one factory, two sisters sat, resting during a break. One suggested that they get a candy bar. The other stopped and reasoned that a candy bar wasn’t necessary, and if they saved their money it could be used in spreading the message of Christ around the world.

Did You Know You Are Part of a Legacy in the Making?
By Mike Schrage on

Let me explain.

Communication in the form of writing has been around for millennia. For example, there are nine different types of hieroglyphics or “sacred carvings” that were used between 3200 BC and AD 400 by various cultures.

Luke tells us that Zachariah asked for a tablet to write the name of his son, John. John tells us that Jesus wrote in the dirt...
