Asin at Ilaw – Changing One Life at a Time

When we started Asin at Ilaw (Salt and Light) in 1994, we couldn’t decide who our audience would be:  Christians—meaning those who already have a personal relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ, or non-Christians—meaning those who just knew about Jesus but didn’t have their lives surrendered to Him. We finally settled on helping Christians become the salt and light that God ordered us to be (Matthew 5:14-16). We just hoped that we could reach non-believers who might be flipping channels at that moment when we were on air.

For me, our audience has remained “nameless” and “faceless” through the years. I mean, I knew my churchmates, some relatives, and friends would be watching “for my sake,” but I didn’t know who else was tuned in. It didn’t take long for me to realize that God works in different ways.

One time, while I was still working in a government agency, (I filed for vacation leaves when we had to tape Asin at Ilaw  episodes), I asked an officemate to make a (then) VHS copy of our program. After almost an hour, he gave me my copy with a very grave expression. He said, “I just learned a very valuable lesson from your program. I fought with my wife this morning over the very same issue that your host was talking about on the show. Now I know I was wrong, and I will have to say I’m sorry to her.” I was shocked, pleased, and touched all at the same time. This officemate was the typical “macho” husband and he watched the program only to make sure nothing went wrong while taping—and here he was on the verge of tears before me!

I knew then that I didn’t have to save the whole world immediately, but understood that God could use an unknown little program to touch and change one life at a time. I didn’t have to know every person who watched the program—God knew each one of those tuned in and how to minister to all of their needs. I just had to do my part and God would faithfully do His.

(Incidentally, my officemate and his family became regular viewers of Asin at Ilaw.)

Nenette and her team have been working out of the basement of her house. GNPI is currently in the process of identifying funds to build a facility for this regional center.
